Science Discovery

The shape and structure of the DNA molecule, the carrier of the genetic code of all life forms, was determined to be a double spiral. Crick and Watson had did researched that DNA was made up of nucleotides – a deoxyribose, a phosphate and one of four bases (cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine). Maurice Wilkins and Rosalin Franklin had performed X-ray diffraction experiments to show that 2 curving strands form the backbone of the DNA molecule. Watson and Crick then used their research to construct 3D models until they discovered the double helix structure of DNA. Watson, Crick, Wilkins and Franklin received the Nobel Prize of 1962 for their work in the discovery of DNA structure. This discovery also created the new field of molecular biology.
